"How to find the Right Breeder"
--------------------------------------
It takes time to find the right Responsible breeder. Sometime's even months
.....
First , you should never buy a puppy from a breeder who doesn't health test .
A Responsible breeder knows the standard of their breed , the pedigree behind their dogs and Health test's before breeding
(at least an Echo , Holter and Thyroid) . A Responsible breeder will not veer off the standard to
suite there own ideals . The standard is in place for a reason .
The best place to start looking for a Responsible breeder is your local kennel
club . Next , look up breeder's web sites email them and 'Ask Question's . There are no dumb questions , the only dumb question
is the one that was not asked .
Make sure they know what they are talking about. Ask if they
are New to breeding Boxers .
Note : This doesn't make them a bad Breeder, as
long as they do health testing and are working to " Better the Breed" then I wouldn't check them off the list for
being new at breeding . Everybody has to start somewhere . :0)
Ask if they show their dogs , Do they health test ? How about temperament testing
? You at least want the Thyroid , Holter and Echo done on both parents . Ask if you can
see their kennel / where the dog lives. After all you want to know where your new family
member might be coming from, and Above all you want to feel comfortable with the Breeder . If you get any
bad vibes then Thank them for their time and don't look back LOL .
Another Great place to look for a breeder, is
at an AKC
(American Kennel Club
) , CKC ( Canadian Kennel Club) and or UKC ( United Kennel Club ) dog show's . Most of the time the
breeders are glad to help point you in the right direction . Just be sure they are done showing for the day , that way they
can answer any questions that you may have .
Please , do not refer to the
newspaper . Most likely these pups are from
un-health tested parents ,poor health and maybe bad temperaments that can cost you money/lawsuits down the road
.
Note: Also even if they do health test still
does not mean they are "Responsible Breeders" . I have found out that the BYB"s are getting smarter . Sure health testing is a great start , but are they really breeding to better the breed .
No , they are still breeding to make money . They don't care what the puppy looks like as long as they have the cash
in hand . Also a Responsible Breeder will never sell a puppy as a Gift no matter what .
And I can't say this enough , Please study the breed ( I'm not saying you have
to know the breed inside and out ) Know what makes them tick , Health issues ,and how to take care
of a Boxer .
Also , don't buy the first puppy you see . I know they are so cute
and oh the puppy breath ....... But you need to put health before the looks . You want that cute
face to be with you for a long time , don't ya ?
I hope this has helped out on your search, no matter what the breed !
